Cambodia Weather - The Best Time to Visit Cambodia

Located in the Southeast Asia, Cambodia enjoys a relatively balmy climate year-round, so there is really never a wrong time to visit the county. However, it has a monsoon climate that creates two distinct seasons, dry (October to late April) and rainy (May to late September). Although it is hot all year round, the dry season is split into two, cool (November to February) and hot (October, March, and April), while the hottest moths are typically May and June, and humidity peaks are March and April. So, the best time to visit Cambodia depends on what you are willing to do during your travels or whether you want avoid the rainy season.

Whether you’re looking for your perfect time to explore the temples in Siem Reap, or bathe in the sunshine, there is no wrong time to visit the country full of culture and lush scenery.

Visiting Cambodia in January

January is usually the driest and coldest month of the year in Cambodia, but temperatures are still around 77°F to 86°F. It is comfortable and make this the excellent time to explore the temples in Siem Reap, the colorful markets, relax on the southern coast’s beaches or trek in the jungle. It is also the best to visit Phnom Penh and Battambang. Because of less humidity, it is easier to visit markets, temples and museums. It is one of the peak seasons in Cambodia, everywhere is more crowded.

Rain in February is still rare and the weather still cool enough to enjoy long walks around the temples in Siem Reap as there are fewer problems with the road during this time. The lower temperatures make sightseeing more pleasant. Visits to Angkor Wat are still very busy in this month. Tonle Sap still holds the bulk of its volume and visits to Tonle Sap floating villages are still available.

March is also the peak time to visit Cambodia, but the temperatures increase from this month on. It begins to rise to over 86°F in some area. Water levels are continuous decline toward the end of the month, meaning that the Tonle Sap is not impressive. It is time to explore the idyllic beaches southern Cambodia. It should be the best time of year to visit the country for those beach holiday seekers. Kep, Kampot and the southern islands are popular at this time of year. The clear skies also make it best time to take a boat tour along Kampot river. Hotels are often booked up far in advance during March.

The high season continues in April but the temperatures climb to very high which often exceed 91°F in some areas. Since the heat at noon is unbearable, it is best to explore the temples in Siem Reap in the morning or in the late afternoon rather than taking a full day tour. The Chaul Chnam (Cambodian New Year) takes places in April. Celebrations will be held in everywhere in the country.

  • Khmer New Year (April 13-16): the most important holiday in Cambodia. In the capital Phnom Penh, most restaurants, attractions and museums close as people head home to be with their families. Families celebrate as they reunite in the countryside. Siem Reap usually has many events take places, so you’d better book accommodation early.

Visiting Cambodia in May

In May, the temperatures increase continually and it can reach as high as mid 86°F to 104°F and the rain begins, but it is a moderate rainfall compared to that in wettest season in August and September. Phnom Penh and Angkor Wat become unbearably hot for some visitors in May, then it becomes a good opportunity to the southern islands, which is perfect for lazy days on the beach and water activities.

The raining season begins from June on, but the showers are sharp and short for the most of part in this month, which should not impact on your trip and plenty of sunshine is still can be expected. Cambodia can be less popular during this time, but it is still can be the best time of year to visit the country. Known as the ‘green season’, Cambodia is in full bloom during the raining season especially the countryside is flourishing. It is a great opportunity to see the landscape as a lush green oasis and most of hotels offer great prices during this period.

The rains continue in July enveloping the whole country but it doesn’t rain all day. However, beaches on the southern coast are best avoided. It is possible to visit some of the highlights while avoiding the crowds. It is the best time of year for families to travel to Cambodia as it coincides with school holidays. Everything is quieter wherever you choose to visit.

In August, rains continue throughout Cambodia and reach their peaks. It can rain every day. Generally, you can expect a downpour, but it won’t last all day although that can happen. The morning can be day and bright, with some showers. The impressive lightning and thunder may happen in the afternoon. Temperature goes down, making temple exploration more comfortable especially in the morning. The Tonle Sap is full again, and There is a lush scene everywhere, making this is a present time to visit for wildlife enthusiasts.

September is the height of the rainy season and heavy showers daily can be expected. The country turns into a waterlogged expanse of tropical green under the daily downpour. Although the roads may turn into mud and flooding in some rural area and it make these areas more difficult to access but it is still a beautiful time of year to see the fantastic scenery of the country.

In October, the rain gets less and less and the temperatures reduce further at average of 81°F, making the month a lovely time to visit Cambodia. Less of crowds with the present weather and take advantage of early season promotional offers.

  • Pchum Ben (October):  A 15-day long grand Buddhist festival in Cambodia takes place in this month, with main celebrations fall over the last day as locals pay their respects to deceased relatives.

Visiting Cambodia in November

In November, the temperatures begin to cool as it comes to the end of the monsoon season, with temperatures averaging a comfortable 77°F which means the peak season begins again. It is the perfect time to explore the Angkor Wat and venture out onto Tole Sap. The lively Cambodian Water Festival takes place in this month and the hotel prices are higher during this period, so it is better to make reservation in advance.

  • Bon Om Touk/Cambodian Water Festival (November): This 3-day festival is one of the most popular festivals in Cambodia. It celebrates the reversal of the Tole Sap River into the Mekong River. Celebrations are over three days with boat races, concerts and fireworks.
